BARKS Adoption Policy

BARKS has many wonderful pets available for adoption. All our pets are spayed, neutered, and up to date on rabies and distemper vaccines. All cats are tested for feline aids and feline leukemia; all dogs are heartworm tested. BARKS strongly discourages the declawing of our cats but we usually have already-declawed cats available for adoption (identified by a green pawprint on the Petfinder listing). Please read these veterinarian-written articles about declawing and the humane alternatives for modifying scratching behavior.

Our screening and adoption process:

Our screening process consists of a written application, including a veterinary reference where applicable, and a personal interview. At our discretion, a visit to the prospective home may be required.

All pets are accepted for return if the pet is not adjusting well at the home. We encourage adoptive homes to make this decision within 30 days but will accept the pet back at any later date with reasonable advance notice. We hold adoption days at various locations within Sussex county. Please check the Events section of our Web site for upcoming dates.

Adoption fees:

The adoption fee is $150.00 for dogs.

For cats, there is a discount for adopting two cats at the same time:

Kittens 0-8 months: $120 ($195 for 2)
Adults 8 months - 7 yrs: $95 ($160 for 2)
Seniors 7+ yrs: $50 ($75 for 2)
Special Needs cats: $50
The fee for adopting multiple cats/mixed ages will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
